Bed Lock
What I like about my Trailmanor (and one of the reasons I wanted this model) is the King Size Bed! This allows two people to sleep “north and south” in line with the length of the trailer as oppose to sleeping “east and west” or in line with the width of the trailer (cross ways). The problem with “east and west’ is that if one of us has to visit the facilities while we are sleeping, one would have to crawl over the other and thus disturb their sleep. So the king size bed solved that problem.
Now when I got my TM I noticed this funny little latch on the front right side of the bed frame. “What’s that for” I thought and then Will (of the late great Car Show fame clued me in. He told me it was a lock….that stands to reason because who wants someone getting into your trailer while you’re gone? I mean it would be very easy to just push the bed in and climb in if it weren’t for the wardrobe and the bathroom walls so I know they would not be able to get in that way without causing major damage and making considerable noise in the attempt. So it has to be for something else. AH HA! One could get in even with the walls up and the wardrobe in place. The rear bed is also the escape hatch in case there is a fire and you can’t get out the entry door. All you have to do is lift up on the front edge of the bed and it will tilt up enough so everyone can get out. The lock was for that tilting thing! If a vandal was outside and wanted in all they would have to do is go underneath the bed and push up on the bottom next to the trailers rear compartment. So to prevent this from happening they put in a sliding bolt lock (image 2115). That stops the bed from being able to tilt up and secures it to the rear bathroom wall (image 2116). The only problem was, that IF I could get that bolt to slide into the hole of the bathroom wall (which was really hard to do) there would be a gap at the back of the bed where it was to mate up with the rear wall of the trailer to seal out the elements. Not good-o! You might as well hang out a sign saying, “hot air and bugs welcome”. So we just took a chance and pushed the bed all the way to the wall in hopes that no bad person would figure this one out and steal us blind while we were off enjoying our vacation. Also I have heard that on some occasions the bed had tilted and dumped the occupants out onto the ground when they tried to get into the bed. That never happened to us…thank goodness!!! So I had vowed to fix this someday and that day has come!
It was a simple fix too. All that was needed was a block of wood cut to 2” X 3” X 1 1/8”. It seems that the block that the lock was screwed down on was not thick enough (by 5/8”…also the distance of the gap in the back of the bed by the wall). So I cut a block that was more thick, drilled some pilot holes for the screws and screwed the lock onto it and into the bed frame (as the screws were long enough to go thru the lock, block and into the frame to hold it there).
Now that’s a done deal and I’ll feel better about going off from our home away from home!
